SMAW Stick Welding

The (SMAW) Shielded Metal Arc Welding basic course is designed to provide the student with:

 - A thorough understanding of the safety precautions for arc welding, and an awareness of the importance of safety in welding.

 - A basic understanding of the shielded metal arc process and equipment along with the key variables that affect the quality of welds (electrode selection, polarity and amperage, arc length, travel speed, and electrode angles).

 - The role of the welder in visual inspection and quality control.

 - An understanding of welding distortion and how to control it.

 - Guidelines for electrode selection and the use of low hydrogen electrodes.

 - Video demonstrations and skill building exercises involving: Single and multi-pass square-groove and fillet welds on 3/16″, 1/4″, 1/2″ and 3/4″ mild steel in all positions; Fillet welds on 11 gauge and 16 gauge mild steel in the horizontal and vertical positions; AWS horizontal (2G) and vertical (3G) qualification tests on 3/8″ mild steel as specified in AWS EG2.0 and QC10, the standard for entry level welders for the AWS SENSE program.

 - The Virtual Welding Trainer at Knight School of Welding an effective evaluation tool for our instructors and educators to get a baseline on student knowledge during the SMAW Stick welding program. The integrated learning approach at Knight School of Welding allows each student to experience the traditional and virtual welding hands-on program, progressing beyond theory and the welding lab so they will learn at a faster pace. Students learn proper body gun position, gun angles & travel speeds. Skilled welders cannot be trained solely on a welding simulator. You've got to burn rods to perfect the art and skill required in arc welding. However, initial welding career exploration exercises and training can now take place in a classroom atmosphere.

GMAW Mig Welding

The (GMAW) Gas Metal Arc Welding basic course is designed to provide the student with:

 - A thorough understanding of the safety precautions for arc welding, and an awareness of the importance of safety in welding.

 - A basic understanding of the gas metal arc process and the key variables that affect the quality of welds (material preparation and fit up, amperage and voltage, electrode angles, travel speed, electrode manipulation, and stick out).

 - An overview of shielding gases and the types of metal transfer associated with gas metal arc welding.

 - Video demonstrations and skill building exercises involving: Single and multi-pass square-groove and filler welds on 3/16 inch mild steel in all positions using short circuit transfer; Single V-Groove welds on 3/8 inch mild steel plates in all positions using short circuit; Fillet welds on 16 gauge mild steel in the horizontal and vertical positions using short circuit transfer; Flat and horizontal fillet welds on mild steel using spray transfer; Single V-Groove welds in the flat position using spray transfer.

FLUX-CORED Arc Welding

The Flux-Cored Arc Welding basic course is designed to provide the student with:

 - A thorough understanding of the safety precautions for arc welding, and an awareness of the importance of safety in welding.

 - A basic understanding of the flux-cored welding arc process, equipment and set up procedures, and how flux-cored arc welding differs from GMAW.

 - An understanding of the key variables that affect the quality of welds such as: the relationship between amperage (wire feed speed) and voltage, electrode selection, electrode angles, travel speed, electrode extension and joint design.

 - Demonstrations and skill building exercises involving fillet welds and groove welds on carbon steel plate in all positions using gas-shielded and self-shielded tubular electrodes as well as 6 inch schedule 80 pipe in the 2G and 5g positions.

The integrated learning approach at Knight School of Welding allows each student to experience the traditional and virtual welding hands-on program, progressing beyond theory and the welding lab so they will learn at a faster pace.
